As I meandered, I was watching a little boy pet one of the dogs and began speaking with the person who brought him. He told me he was here with this wife to promote finding homes for retired racing greyhounds and took me over to where their booth was. I had seen a similar display at the Art & Apples Festival in Rochester but didn't really take the time to understand the passion they have to rescue these beautiful dogs. Renee Guzyng told me about what it was like for these dogs. Mostly raised for profit, they live under awful conditions - in cages most of the day except for an hour or two when they race. She told me about what it took for her to be considered the "right home/owner" to adopt her pet which she clearly loved. She was representing the Michigan Greyhound Connection in Berkley, Michigan. The average age of a retired greyhound is 2-5 years when their racing career is over and each year thousands are killed or sold into research. I also talked to a volunteer of one of the organizations that promote foster care for animals while they are waiting for a home. They don't have a physical site where people can drop off abandoned animals so she was taking care of two animals while they were waiting to be adopted. I know of someone who rescues stray cats and tries to find them homes but the number of cats is increasing because she doesn't have the support of such an organization. Needless to say, I was impressed with the passion that so many people have to protect animals. When my sister always got her next pet, she always adopted and now I have a while new appreciation for her love of animals. More then 100 animals are dropped off at the MHS each day. The Humane Society says that most are hungry, scared and alone. Not only do they find loving homes for thousands of animals but they also investigate more than 5,000 cases of abuse and neglect and bring abusers to justice. They educate pet owners and the general public about animal issues and more. On average it costs $120 for MHS to care for each animal. Royal Oak Realtor selling Real Estate in Southeastern Michigan. The Detroit Zoo and the Michigan Humane Society, in collaboration with several local animal welfare organizations, hosted the Fall Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo September 27 & 28, 2008. This is the 16th year of hosting the event. The nation's largest off-site companion-animal adoption program. this event finds homeless animals a new best friend. I thought making a video would be a great way to bring attention to Royal Oakand showcase one of the many things the Detroit Zoo and Michgian Humane Soceity are up to. Not having a pet myself, I was not familar with the work the Humane Society does on behalf of animals. For me, it would be a fun and touching time to watch children finding pets. But I came away with a new awareness of what the Humane Society is up to and and how committed the volunteers are to "Help animals go from Homeless to Loved".
