Funky Ferndale Art Fair

FUN, FUNKY and FASHIONABLE are a few of the many words used to describe the distinct community of Ferndale Michigan where local residents and businesses are cultivating an image of being "hip" and a fun place to hang out.  Ferndale is full of galleries, unique shops and "fun and funky" entertainment.  So, it goes without saying that they would create a unique art fair that does testament to the image they create.  Described as "artwork that won't just sit on the wall behaving itself", they attempt to find artists as individual as the community.  They do feature top traditional artists but lean more toward those working in non-traditional styles with edgy messages.  

Art with eisel and canvasFerndale sponsored their Fifth Annual "Funky Ferndale Art Fair" and the DIY Street Fair, both downtown Ferndale September 20-21.  Located along Nine Mile Road from Woodward Avenue to Planavon Street, it is a juried show with over 300 artists from across the country submitting their work. More than 100 artists from 22 states presented their work for sale to a background of acoustic music. 

They were attempting to get in to the Guinness Book of World Records by creating the world's longest comic strip. With the assistance of artist Daniel Cascardo, participating artists worked together to create the comic strip.  "The current record is about 660 feet," Cascardo said. "We are aiming to crash that record by doing a 1,100-foot strip, the full length of the festival site."  By Sunday afternoon they were anticipating posting it along the storefronts on Nine Mile but calculated that they will roll it up, bring it back next year and break the world record at the Sixth Annual Funky Ferndale Art Fair.
